Father’s Day is all about what the guys want, and that definitely includes meals. We like to spend the day outdoors hanging out with the family and enjoying a hearty picnic. Rumor is that it’s a challenge to bring warm foods on a picnic or make them when camping. With a little ingenuity and creativity, you can create any cozy meal.
One of my family’s and husbands favorite meals is Poutine, and it gets requested a lot. I came up with a different outdoor and campfire version last Father’s Day and it was a hit. For us, baked beans are synonymous with camping and I’ve combined them with french fries to create an awesome dish. I call it my Campfire Poutine, it can be made easily both indoors and outdoors. There’s nothing better than fresh air and exercise to encourage an appetite. A snuggly campfire, rustic tableware & dishes, and tasty fond foods will make Father’s Day so memorable.
To create this dish, you can either prebake your thick cut fries and reheat them or pan fry them on the camp stove. Potatoes do not take very long to cook and the yummy smell permeating the picnic area is divine! You only need three ingredients to make this dish, potatoes, any hard cheese and a can of deep brown beans in your favorite sauce. It’s that simple.
8 large potatoes cut into thick slices
300 grams of cheese crumbled or cubed – my family loves marble cheese
1 can Deep brown beans – in tomato, maple syrup, or molasses sauce
OR, try your favorite Chili Con Carne
Pan fry potato strips or reheat until hot. Add one can of brown beans and cover until warm. Remove lid and add crumbled cheese on top. Replace lid for one minute or until the cheese is just starting to melt. Serve and enjoy!
This Father’s Day we are planning a relaxing day in one of our favorite wilderness parks. We’re going to pack the cooler with all the ingredients to make our beloved Campfire Poutine and savor the moment. We’re also bringing our camera, our walking sticks, a healthy appetite, and a sense of adventure. I’m excited already! Happy Father’s Day to all my male readers!
