Tropical Traditions Hulled Spelt Flour
In a world of many many different grains Spelt is one of my favorite. Spelt was cultivated by ancient civilizations and is a wheat native to Southern Europe and Western Asia. It’s a whole kernel grain that has a nice nutty taste to it. It’s easy to digest and is very high in protein and B complex vitamins. It’s a perfect food if you are a vegan like me.
Tropical Traditions carries several different organic grains including “Certified Organic Hulled Spelt. I was really happy to try out the fabulous grain. This grain arrived in kernels so it will require a mill or a very powerful blender to pulverize it. I put about 20 oz of Spelt in my blender and buzzed it for about 5 minutes intermittently and got 30 oz of a medium flour. If you want a finer flour you will have to grind for a couple of more minutes. I personally really like the courser flour.
There is nothing like a bowl of steaming hot spelt porridge with blueberries for breakfast. It takes about 5 minutes over a medium heat to cook and can be dressed up with a variety of fruits and nuts. I love this for breakfast. It’s high fiber and fills you up till lunch. I also made some hearty biscuits using the spelt flour. I took one of my older biscuit recipes and just exchanged flours and they turned out wonderful. A little bit of jam or honey on this biscuits and you have a perfect snack or have one with a bowl of soup. You can also find some spelt recipes on the Tropical Traditions recipe link.
The generous people at Tropical Traditions would love to offer a 5lb bag of Organic Hulled Spelt to one lucky reader. Thank you Tropical Traditions!
